BACKCOUNTRY FISHING AND PRICES

Stalk the calm, backcountry waters and enjoy sight-casting to very powerful adversaries. Your mission will be to explore Islamorada's Florida Bay, seeking out bonefish, permit, tarpon, redfish, seatrout and snook. (See backcountry target species) This year, there have been unbelievable numbers of target species fish available to anglers, mostly because of strong catch-and-release policies instituted in the last two decades. Today, killing a bonefish, tarpon, permit, sailfish or marlin has become politically and socially unacceptable in a local fishing community concerned about long-term preservation of their prized assets. In essence, release the fish and save the memory.

You might think calling Islamorada the Fishing Capital of the World may sound a bit overstated. However here, there are approximately 300 backcountry and offshore captains currently operating in Islamorada. Snook, permit and redfish all range between five and thirty pounds, while each of these fish retain enough power to separate an unsuspecting angler from an entire spool of line.

Tarpon are referred to in an almost religious manner as the "silver king." Weighing up to 200 pounds, the tarpon often becomes airborne when erupting from the calm, backcountry waters where he resides. Late March through July is tarpon season in Islamorada.

Islamorada's mighty bonefish, weighing to 15 pounds, is affectionately referred to a the "gray ghost." He is spooky, elusive and lightning fast. To catch and release a bonefish is the thrill of a lifetime. However, to release the frisky gray ghost while fly fishing from the bow of a modern skiff, provides the ultimate angling achievement for any angler who seeks a higher level of skill.

Another fringe benefit of backcountry fishing is the scenery, which is fantastic. Witness white pelicans, roseate spoonbill, great white heron, osprey and countless other tropical bird species. You may encounter manatees, sawfish, porpoise, alligators and even a rare glance at a saltwater crocodile. One angler commented, "It was like a trip to Jurassic Park, the marine version."

Prices for one or two anglers includes tackle, bait, ice, boat and a good captain with excellent eyesight. A fishing license is not required on any chartered trip from Papa Joe's Marina. Two anglers are comfortable aboard these small skiffs, however, with some captains, it is possible for three people to fish. An additional charge of $75 is made for the third angler, for all trips.
